Song of the Soul

In the depth of my soul there is

A wordless song – a song that lives
In the seed of my heart.
It refuses to melt with ink on
Parchment; it engulfs my affection
In a transparent cloak and flows,
But not upon my lips.

How can I sing it? I fear it may
Mingle with earthly ether;
To whom shall I sing it? It dwells
In the house of my soul, in fear of
Harsh ears.

When I look into my inner eyes
I see the shadow of its shadow;
When I touch my fingertips
I feel its vibrations.
The deeds of my hands heed its
Presence as a lake must reflect
The glittering stars;
My tears reveal it, as bright drops of dew
Reveal the secret of a withering rose.

It is a song composed by contemplation,
And published by silence,
And shunned by clamor,
And folded by truth,
And repeated by dreams,
And understood by love,
And hidden by awakening,
And sung by the soul.

It is the song of love;
What Cain or Esau could sing it?
It is more fragrant than jasmine;
What voice could enslave it?
It is heartbound, as a virgin’s secret;
What string could quiver it?
Who dares unite the roar of the sea
And the singing of the nightingale?
Who dares compare the shrieking tempest
To the sigh of an infant?
Who dares speak aloud the words
Intended for the heart to speak?
What human dares sing in voice
The song of God?

--Kahlil Gibran

A poem about the unfathomable and inexpressible essence of the divine truth that we al feel in our hearts. All is one.. the roar of the sea, the sigh of an infant, the shriek of a tempest. Beautiful.

 I have thought about this reading a number of times over the past few days, and words don't come to mind.  Maybe my soul isn't singing.  Maybe I'm not hearing the song.  Maybe the song of my soul is a silent song.  Maybe my soul isn't as open as I sometimes think it is.  I have some concern regarding those maybes.  And I appreciate this piece which pushes me to listen more closely and reflect further.

 When I think of Him, it numbs my soul; the void swallows all, like the black hole. I am lost into a world of utter emptiness. It is momentary ; I yearn to live it long. It is a shadow of the real it seems.

 My guess is that one can experience the song of love by openly noticing.  I remember reading William Penn's quote on a Chicago bus advertisement many years ago.  I was touched when I read it and I'm touched today when I think of it.  It reads: "I will pass this way but once, any good,therefore, that I may do, or any kindness that I may show, to any human being, let me do it now.  Let me not defer nor neglected it for shall not pass this way again.  As Gandhi said: "There is no way to peace.  Peace is the way," so too there may be no way to a song of love other than through openly noticing. I am also reminded of Thomas Keating's quote: "God's first language is silence.  All else is a poor translation."  I am also reminded of Francis of Assisi who in so many words said, always be peaceful and kind.  Use words if necessary..  His quote is: "Preach the gospel always.  Use words if nec... A friend of mine is dying.  His wife posts on the caring bridge site every so often, and over the past 11 months has chronicled the diagnosis, the doctor visits, the nurses, the treatments, the prognosis, the medication, the educated guess, the hospice, the technology, the pain, and now the final moments…   His is a legacy of teacher.  While I write this I am not referring to his chosen profession, although that is teacher as well.  His teaching legacy is how he shares his heart.  He champions the unusual.  He honors the underdog.  He encourages the unfathomable.  He listens to the unseen.   He leads us on this journey toward the inevitable outcome of each birth in a way that allows the rest of us to give back to him and search our own hearts for the words and actions that will remind him of his legacy of teacher.  Say it now.    In most societies, and especially in the United States, the process of life and its end as ...
