Inter-faith To Inter-Pilgrim

I have wished to engage in what may be called an inter-pilgrim dialogue. In my judgment, there is something wrong with interfaith dialogues. When the East-West or interfaith dialogues are too much bound by the past, the dynamic nature of cultures and religions, and above all, of human beings, cannot be appreciated. If one has never met someone from another culture or religion, interfaith or inter-cultural conversation is obviously a good idea. But I wish to suggest as strongly as I can that interfaith dialogues are at best a preliminary stage of human-to-human dialogue and can even be an impediment to a deeper understanding.

A dialogue of cultures and worldviews, in which the parties involved declare their adherence to one or another faith or culture, can fix these faiths and cultures into the entities that they were. In fact, these cultures and religions are alive and dynamic and are undergoing large and serious transformations right now. An inter-pilgrim dialogue, which is of necessity somewhat trans-cultural, trans-religious and trans-disciplinary, is needed to move into a future of a larger comprehension. We don't need to stunt the growth or prevent a radical reformulation of the traditions by insisting that everyone declare their adherence to one or another version of the past. Every major spiritual teacher, especially the truly revolutionary ones like the Buddha and Krishna and the Christ, points out both the great call carried in the subtle core of the traditions as well as the betrayal (a word which comes from the same root as tradition) of the real living heart of the Sacred by them. To fix the other, or myself, in some past mould and thus to deny the possibility of a wholly unexpected radical transformation is surely a sin against the Holy Spirit: treating the other as an object rather than a person, an 'it' and not as a 'Thou.'

[...] The search for Love can become merely a personal wish for comfort and security, just as the search for Truth can become largely a technological manipulation of nature in the service of the military or of industry--of fear and greed. Whenever truth and love are separated from each other, the result is sentimentality or dry intellectualism in which knowledge is divorced from compassion. Partiality always carries seeds of violence and fear in it. Thus, in the name of 'our loving God' many people have been killed, and many destructive weapons have been developed by a commitment to 'pure knowledge.' But such is not the best of humanity –in science or in religion. Integrated human beings in every culture and in every age have searched for Truth and Love, insight and responsibility. Above the mind, the soul seeks the whole, and is thus able to connect with wisdom and compassion.

Let us not conclude for the Truth is in Vastness beyond all formulations and forms. In being alive in the search one is alive. Openness to the Sacred always calls for sacrifice, primarily of one's smallness, which is buttressed by an exclusive identification with a particular religion or nation or creed. A person who occupies neither this place nor that -- physically or intellectually -- may be uneasy, but this is the price of being free and in movement. The only one realization which is needed is that there is a subtle world, and that I am seen from that world. My existence now, here, is in the light of the subtler world. To realize the presence of the subtle world and to live in the light of that vision requires a continual impartial re-visiting of oneself, which in its turn requires a sacrificing of self-occupation. What is needed is the bringing of the religious mind (which is quiet, compassionate, comprehensive, and innocent) to bear on all matters. Not only to science, but also to technology, arts, government, education, and other affairs.

And the religious mind--which is the mind which is suffused with a sense of the Sacred--is cultivated in an individual soul. It is not a matter of bringing knowledge systems or abstractions, such as science and religion or theology, together. What is needed is a cultivation of a religious mind. The new paradigm is always the perennial one. It is possible to have a level of consciousness-conscience that sees the uniqueness of each being as well as their oneness with the All. This is largely a matter of metaphysical and spiritual transformation which requires an on-going sacrificing of one's smallness -- even more in the heart than in the mind. The new forms will naturally be different. Truth has no history; expressions of Truth do. The new dawn, when we will no longer be there to look at it with the usual eyes, will bring a new song and a new word. But the Essential Word shall abide, often heard in the silence between words.

Seed Questions for Reflection

How do you relate to the notion that truth is in vastness beyond all forms and formulations? Can you share a personal story of a time you felt this vastness? What helps you be alive in the search?

Gurdjieff said dose the love through the High C to ensure purity and right meeting of need. Many believe the Krisha story arose because Jesus demonstrated life not death and walked to India where he found willing listeners. what keeps me searching? I want to get complete before I pass on and not have to come back to this illusory state again.

I am 86yrs
Some years ago I was going home on my bicycle. A Car came up behind me,,,hit me,,, dragged me 100yds and left me dying on the roadside. An of-duty policeman found me alerted Emergency Servces. I woke up in hospital remembering nothing but finding I had multiiple injuries. My family were first told Iwas dying but I surprised them by living! But year by year the injuries hae entailed a whole range of intrusive operations. My professional work entailed working with those who cared for the dying. I am retired now but have tried to live caring for others in little ways; caring for our vulnerable world

Truth is all-pervasive and ever-expanding. Forms and formulations are limiting forces; they can never confine truth. At best, they serve as hints, guides, or pointing fingers toward it.
Last year, the weight of work pressure shattered my imaginary world, and in that breaking, I experienced expressions emerging from the vastness of truth. It was neither my natural reaction nor my innate strength. Instead, it felt like an echo of this vastness, revealing something beyond my usual sense of self.
I resist being identified with any ism or bound by rites and rituals. While such identification may seem to offer security, resisting it makes me vulnerable. Yet, if I remain strong and aware—without being overwhelmed by this vulnerability—it fuels my search for truth, keeping me alive in its pursuit.

Hmmmm! from Dalai Lama , " Everyday , I think as I wake up, I am fortunate to have woken up, I am Alive , I have this precious human life, And I'm not going to waste it" . Just, breathing and feeling, seeing planets in the evening sky, laughing at the antics of toddlers, my partner bringing me tea , typing these words and knowing that they are going out into a world wide web, I feel the vastness. " Effectiveness is the measure of truth" ( what works is true) . Experiencing a mysterious alive vastness works for me.

My view is that all forms and formulations limit and often obstruct one's view of vastness such that we see concepts and constructs rather than see the vastness. In short, we see our thinking rather than see what is. As I let go of what I was brought up to see, and let go of the forms and formulations I was given and taught, I believe I see some of the vastness and at times feel it, and even a little sight and feeling is awesome. The vastness is not limited or defined except by us, and it is for me to see through unbiased unconditioned eyes, or at least through less biased and less conditioned eyes. What helps me be alive in the search is the search itself. I am alive in the process of searching openly beyond forms and formulations, free of preconceptions, not attached to someone else's preordained truth, seeing for myself.

Hi Ravi, I love your writings. Here's a present for you - a little story I just wrote. Hope you and others enjoy it. Hiring Nelson Twenty years ago, I oversaw a 60-person operations center for a national real estate appraisal management company. We had many customer service reps (CSR) whose job was to do their best to resolve whatever issues came their way. We were hiring and Nelson was one of the candidates. The encounter was so unusual that it still affects me to this day. Nelson had recently arrived from Nigeria to make his way, and hopefully his fortune in America. He had also planned to return to Nigeria someday, his true home. He was in his late twenties, very handsome (more about this in a moment) and had the full measure of immigrant spark. Although he spoke English quite well, he had a thick accent and was somewhat difficult to understand. Since the CSR work was almost exclusively through the telephone, it was important that the customers would understand him. Reading his... View full comment

Pilgrimage is a spiritual journey, a journey of truth, a journey of faith. It is a journey of light that helps us see the truth. All forms and formulations change. Truth is beyond the changing forms and formulations. Truth is without walls. Truth is vast and unbound. It is not bound by walls and divisiveness. Truth is universal. Truth unites us. Truth is One. There is no divisiveness between my truth and your truth. Truth is like light. Truth is universal. I have glimpses of Truth when my mind is free from mine and thine divisiveness. It is an experience of Oneness. What creates this Oneness? When do I realize such Oneness? When I love someone unconditionally I feel such Oneness. I realize it when I go beyond the walls of mine and thine and keep my mind and heart open, clear, and receptive in spite of apparent differences. There are numerous instances of experiencing such vastness and oneness in my life. I am blessed to be born in a relatively poor family but rich in heart acceptin... View full comment
