Man In The Glass

When you get what you want in your struggle for self And the world makes you king for a day Just go to a mirror and look at yourself And see what that man has to say For it isn't your father, mother or wife Whose judgment upon you must pass The fellow whos verdict counts most in your life Is the one staring back from the glass Some people may think you are straight-shootin' chum And call you a wonderful guy But if the man in the glass says you're only a bum If you can't look him straight in the eye He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest For he's with you clear up to the end And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test If the man in the glass is your friend You may fool the whole world down the pathway of life And get pats on the back as you pass But your final reward will be heartaches and tears If you've cheated the man in the glass -- Bill Parcells to his team when departing on January 3, 1999 Originally called, 'Guy in the Glass' by Dale Wimbrow

A poem that goes by many names, and unfortunately, has been seen as “anonymous” or credited to others. Dale Wimbrow is the rightful author of this insightful poem that explores life’s meaning, who we are in it and the importance of self-reflection.

This poetic rendition of a life lived, or even less lived, is one that resonates to the souls of they whom question if they had made a difference in their lives and the lives of those closest to them. When the vision that reflects from the mirror is not recognizable, nor undisguisable, it then will be what one of the commenters below, Shane K. Floyd, Ph.D., mentioned, "a time marked by genuine self-introspection." Moreover, if you cannot look in the mirror and like what you see then I would be inclined to agree with Bill Parcels, that, "you have cheated the person in the glass" but it is not too late to make a change.

Coach BillParcells, placed emphasis on the importance of reckoning with self. A time marked by genuine self-introspection, is a time marked by asking "am I becoming my best me." If there is no room for betterment in correction, we could very well become a danger to ourselves.

Hello Dr. Shane K. Floyd, I found such insight in your brief, yet profound comment. I am always in awe of they whom can convey such a deep and meaningful message in very few words. This is definitely a gift that cannot be taught. Thank you for sharing.
