"Because he valued the dharma, he
did not cherish his body or life, how
much the less did he crave a king's
throne, cities, towns, palaces, gardens,
groves, or any material thing at all."
	--Avatamsaka sutra
	  Chapter 40

Hearst castle sits on the cliffs above. W.R. Hearst collected dharma; he brought the entire world in bits and pieces to southern California: Italian frescoes, African giraffes, British courtyards, Chinese porcelains, Persian rugs. He scattered an emperor's wealth to the winds, building a monument to emptiness. His tragic effort at immortality is one of human kind's most adorned follies.

We prize our shelf of sutras in the old Plymouth. They contain a treasury of wisdom. Sometimes we open the car door and the sutras seem to glow. Cultivate the Sutras' dharma as the Buddha worth more than any throne, palace, city, or garden on the earth.

March 16, 1978 "Dharma Bums' Dilemma"

We bowed past San Simeon. The road abruptly shrinks and twists. The road signs say,

Road Narrows
Highway I -Cabrillo highway" Gorda-26
Monterey-94
San franisco-212"
"Road closed 41 miles north of this point."
